He’s a descendant of the Swedish noble Gyllenhaal family.
2. Use your instincts
As a child, he was regularly exposed to filmmaking due to his family’s deep ties to the industry.
3. Follow great energy
He graduated from the Harvard-Westlake School in LA, then attended Columbia University, to study Eastern religions and philosophy.
4. Don’t compromise yourself
His first lead role was in October Sky, Joe Johnston’s 1999 adaptation of the Homer Hickam autobiography Rocket Boys.

Donnie Darko, his second film, was not a box office success upon its initial 2001 release but eventually became a cult favorite.

He was almost cast as Spider-Man for Spider-Man 2 due to director concerns about original Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire’s health.

For his performance in Brokeback Mountain, he received critical acclaim and won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
8. Always be prepared
He received further recognition for roles in Zodiac, Brothers, Source Code, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, and Southpaw.
9. Respect the audience
He played the lead role in the romantic comedy Love and Other Drugs, for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination.
10. Find real success
He was on the jury for the main competition section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
